Eden's second birthday session in Pittsburg, KS, was so much fun and the perfect example of why I love milestone photography for toddlers! He's such a silly, energetic, and adorable little guy. I loved making him laugh, chasing him around, and capturing this milestone for his family.
Why pitt state university is perfect for photos
One of the reasons I chose this location was because Pitt State's campus features a beautiful open space right in the center. Not only is there ample room for littles to run and play, but there are also plenty of trees and lovely greenery that makes it a prime location for photos. It's a great spot to ensure active kids don't feel cramped or boxed in while allowing us to get a variety of scenery and poses in photos.
my approach to Toddler sessions
Here's the thing about photographing kids: they're the boss.
While I do provide guidance to keep the session flowing, I've learned that letting kids lead a little makes them more comfortable. They want to move to a new spot? I move with them. They want to start running? I'm running with them.
For Eden's session, I followed his lead while adding in my own goofy tricks and guidance. From playing peekaboo, having kids' music playing softly in my pocket, and saying "Pew-wee stinky!" over and over, we were able to get so many sweet pictures during his photoshoot.
My goal is to meet them where they are, be silly with them, and make them feel comfortable enough to show their real emotions. This is how we get those adorable little personality details and genuine smiles parents want to remember forever.
Details that made this session special
Eden was such a joy to photograph. Bubbles were the secret weapon for refocusing his attention. His parents were the MVPs for bringing the bubble gun and helping create some silly shots.
One of my favorite moments was when he was laughing so hard that tears started pooling in his eyes. It absolutely melted my heart when I was editing this session and noticed those teary eyes from giggling so hard.
From having his little "cool kid" moment with sunglasses on to playing peekaboo behind one of the trees on campus, this session was a blast. By the end, he was winding down, and I was able to capture a few shots of him just playing quietly with his toy.
His session was the perfect combination of fun, wild energy, and a few thoughtful, quieter moments.
Insights for your child's birthday photos
Are you thinking about booking a milestone session for your toddler? Here are a few tips for your session:
- Don't stress if they don't want to sit still! It's completely normal for toddlers to want to be on the move.
- Let them have a little control. It helps them to feel relaxed and leads to more authentic photos.
- Bring bubbles, favorite toys, or snacks. Bringing any of these items helps keep them engaged during the session.
- Limit screen time. Try to limit it before the session, so they aren't overstimulated when it's time for photos.
- Trust the photographer. Even if the session feels chaotic, don't worry, we are still getting great photos.
